That includes posts about your indoor garden rooms, botanical dishware.....glassware.....fabrics......art....ceramic or porcelain. Floral motif crafts you've created. If you collect vintage gardening tools, books, magazines.....it all helps inspire a 'fertile' mind

That's right it's time for the 1st What's Cookin' In The Cottage Kitchen. Come on in the kitchen and join us for some warm conversation, delish dishes, and some vintage fun. Link in and tell us about your collections of vintage cookbooks. If you have old magazines, it's fun to see all the vintage food ads and photos of period kitchen decor. Personal recipes are always a yummy idea. Who doesn't love kitchen kitch, and showcased kitchens are always inspiring. So, grab a cup of coffee, tea, or like me...soda.....and a snack and stay a while.

November Cottage Color Party

November's color is Burgandy. Now this is a classic fall color....leaves, mums, cranberries, mulled wine.... and very popular in decorating.......throws, overstuffed chairs, Asian rugs, placemats and napkins. When you think of burgundy in vintage terms there are lots of things you remember......ruby and cranberry glass, sack cloth, diner dishware, framed botanical prints. I'm sure there are more you remember in your collections and that you incorporate into your decor. We can't wait to see you're examples!

2011 Holiday Gift Tag Swap

*Tags must be at least 2"x3" in size, and no larger than 3"x5"

If you are international, make sure you have the correct postage--email me if you need help figuring it

Tags must reach me no later than November 19th. I would like to have them back in the mail to you the week after Thanksgiving...

It's time again for the Cottage Colors Party. Octobers Color is Aqua...now you may wonder why....but have you noticed the sunsets of fall are filled with reds, lavenders, aquas, golds.... a glorious warmth. The summery Cottage Color Party!

Yes, I know It's a couple days late...sorry. I've been having some trouble with my back..can't sit long..can't stand long...laying down is ok, but trying to move...yowza. Caused me to lose track of time.

The color August is ORANGE. Orange is that saucy little color that adds a little heat without making it too hot. The color orange is said to stimulate activity........maybe that's why the shades of orange fill vintage decor books and magazines for the color to use in rec rooms and family rooms of the 60's and 70's. It is also supposed to stimulate appitite too.....I suppose that's why Institutions, Schools, and Hospitals used those shades in their caferterias back then too. Orange also encourages socialization...uh.....I guess that's why peaches and oranges were used so much in decorating on shows in the 70's and 80's. Orange is the seventh most popular color among Americans. Orange is considered jovial, warm, and energetic,
It can be forceful, but is exuberant. It is associated with fruitfulness, adventure, vigor and wholesomeness.
It's the color you either love or hate. So, let's see those shades and hues of orange in your garden.......home....vintage collections......or even your vintage wardrobe!

The original plan of this party was to do this with the change of each season, but the spring party--well it was still cold in many parts of the country, so the party was too early. Then we got hit with the opposite, blazing heat!

The Spring Cottage Garden Party

What inspires you?
I love working with metals such as soldering, I love roses and of course cottage style, so making soldered jewelry is a something I love.

How did you become a artist?
I've made things as long as I can remember, working with my hands was something I always enjoyed, my father was also very creative.

Where is your craft space?
I have a room I use only for my crafts, sewing, soldering, painting and crafts books. Sometimes I can spend up to 3 hours working on one project, taking a break and coming back to it later.

What do like to munch on while crafting?
I like to munch on semi-sweet chocolate chips and Boston baked beans. And I like Iced Tea.

What are your favorite tools?
Tools I like are; soldering tools, pliers and wire cutters, Dremel tool, along with scissors and paper cutter, Materials are; paper

Shirley Kulak. You may know Shirley by shirleystitches. I have no doubt that you recognize her work.
Shirley lives in St. Joseph, Missouri which is about 45 minutes north of Kansas City or two hours away from Omaha, Nebraska.
Shirley says, "I have been doing hand embroidery work for a long time because that is something that my mother taught me a long time ago. She taught us to quilt, crochet, embroidery, sew, and cook just to name a few." I started first as I got older doing embroidery work for a wedding present, baby gift, birthday present, and basically giving away my embroidery. Her love of the 40's and 50's inspire most of her vintage tea towel patterns, of which you can see from the cute pattern above.

I have been working to perfect it and I really started doing more of the bigger pieces after my husband got very sick in Nov. of 1999. The first year he was in an out of the hospital every month. I had to have something to help take my mind off what was going on with him and I started embroidering more. I could take the hand embroidery with me where as you couldn't take a machine. I lived 24/7 at the hospital because I became his primary caregiver, where I made decisions for his life.
Shirley began selling her craft in craft shows, a booth in antique mall, and then had it on consignment in a shop in Weston, Missouri. My best place was the shop in Weston, she sold my things as fast as I could make them, but she closed her shop and that is how I got involved with etsy. I have an etsy shop called "shirleystitches."

Like many of us, Shirley is a member of Etsy Cottage Style and joined to make friends and share ideas, and be a part of a group. Shirley also has a blog. You can find her at http://shirleystitches.blogspot.com. Be sure to visit, see what she is up to and leave a nice comment. She also sells a little on e-bay, but does not have a shop. "Most of my things are sold through etsy, or before I even get them listen because I usually show them as part of my blog."

I love to travel if I get a chance. We are known to get in the car and just go where ever with no particular place in mind which can be read about on my blog.. My friends that I have made is my way of seeing the world. We are limited as how far we get to travel away from home and have to have doctor's approval. The short day trips are the ones we will only be gone during the day.We try to go to Branson, Missouri where we enjoy going to the shows.
I have three children, Angela, Patrick, and John Robert. Angela and Patrick are both married. Angela has a little boy Ethan, Patrick has two boys, Matthew and Jacob. All three boys pictures can be seen on my blog. .
I have beaded skating dresses when my daughter was younger. She ice skated and we traveled with her. Our first Market Monday has ended. We had over 81 participants!! And, what talented, inventive, artistic, and unique shops there were. It took me all week just go thru and visit.
Thanks to all of you it was a success.

Now some of you told us that you mentioned Market Monday in your own blogs and to your followers. That is great. We all need to do this. Since this a free venue, we all have ability to advertise 'word of mouth', again free. Lol....I don't know about the rest of you, but that's right in my budget. So, let's make a campaign to sell Market Monday. Put the Market Monday banner on your sites letting visitors know your participate. Let visitors know what Market Monday is. If you have Market Monday specials or add new items specifically for Market Monday talk about them. Cleo Headley.....Cleo is orginally from Ithaca, New York, but now makes her home in Webster, New York.

Cleo began crafting at the tender age of nine. She credits her mother with teaching her the art of embroidery. Cleo's mother was a seamstress, as well as her sister, Adriana and her Aunt Emma. This is a family of very talented women. Without a doubt, Cleo was distined to become an artist in her own right. Altho the women in the family sewed all of Cleo's prom dresses and school clothes, they even made her wedding dress, she was on a different path. Cleo had a love a quilting, doll making, pillows and just about anything for the home decor. Together, they must have made quite a fabulous team. As you can see from the quilt in the above picture, there is a lot of talent in those fingers.

In the 1970's, Cleo taught herself to tole painted. She bought books and began her quest with paint and brush. She studied the art of Theorem painting with a skilled teacher and eventually was a teacher herself. You could find Cleo's work in shops and also in the craft show circuit. She did the shows for over 35 years, spreading her love of painting all over the country.

Her background is extensive: Floral designer for 15 yrs, designer at Michaels for 3 yrs, and Interior Designer for two stores. Cleo's love for the arts and crafts took her on the journey of a lifetime. As time would have it, the internet opened up to new possiblities and the groundwork was layed. Cleo's work can sometimes be found on Ebay, she is listed on Etsy and now has opened her new website which can be found HERE.

Cleo continues her love of quilting and painting. She is also very interested in colors, which has lead her to jewelry making and designing. We all wish Cleo lots of luck with everything she does. This woman is an artist wearing many hats, and very accomplished at whatever she decides to do. These pictures are just a small sampleing of the talent she has. Cross-stitching, painting, beading, jewelry making, floral work, ribbon work, quilting, the list goes on and on. I feel very fortunate to call Cleo as a friend and look forward to seeing much more of her work.

We have decided that because ECS has become so large, we don't have a chance to get to know all the members the way we would like, so we came up with an idea to pick a couple members each month to interview and feature on the blog. This is strickly random and not manditory. If you are picked at do not want to be interviewed that is fine too. All you would have to do is let us know and we will choose someone else. This is a great way to get to know each other and to promote yourself. With that being said, Let me introduce you to: Sandi Bodnarchuk.
Sandi is from Tyndall, Manitoba, Canada. Sandi sells on Etsy and Ebay, and would love to have her own website and hopefully that will come soon. She also sells to friendswho knows she always has something available if they are looking for a gift. Sandi's blog is http://www.forheartandhome.blogspot.com/ and you might want to give her a visit, leave a nice comment and see some of the things she has been up to.
When asked how she got her start at the sewing machine, I was very surprised and excited to hear the following story: "I started sewing at a very young age on my mother's old Singer treadle sewing machine. I was too small to reach the treadle, so my sister would work it with her hands and I would sew. I would tell her when to start and stop - I have to admit I got my fingers caught more than a few times because she didn't stop in time.
"Sandi went on to tell us, "I started by making doll clothes - no Barbie dolls in those days, but I had a tiny doll I kept very well dressed. Then I started sewing clothing when I got pregnant, and made all my maternity clothes. It just progressed from there - sewing for my daughter when she was little, designing and sewing her graduation dress with no pattern. I made it out of an old bedsheet first, then when it got to be what I wanted, I used the real fabric. The most cherished item I sewed was my granddaughter's Christening dress and hat when she was baptized. I have always done crafts of one kind of another. I am the happiest when I am creating and there are a lot of nights that I wake up with an idea and have to suppress the urge to get up and start making it at 2:00 a.m."

This is a very talented lady, Sandi also paints. She is self taught! Sandi loves to paint roses on anything that she can find, especially old discarded items. I love to make Victorian inspired items, pillows, sachets, wall hangings, door hangers and totes. I especially enjoy making guest towels from vintage damask tablecloths, porch pillows from vintage tablecloths, Valentine and Christmas stockings, friendship balls, pin cushions, hand bags, market bags, pillows with vintage graphics, rag rugs, hanging sachets, pot holders and embellished hangers. Almost all of my items contain either vintage lace, vintage crochet, vintage embroidery or vintage mother of pearl buttons. I love taking a beautiful piece of fabric and embellishing it with something old that may have otherwise been thrown away.I think one thing that we always love to hear is where artists get their start. "My mother.
When I was growing up I didn't have a bought coat until I left home. My mother sewed all of our winter coats and almost everything we wore. She made all her own clothes and in the early years, moms didn't wear slacks or jeans. She always had on a pretty skirt with a matching blouse or a dress. Every Easter she made us new outfits to wear to church and would buy us matching hats and new shoes. My mother had wonderful fashion sense and I hope some of it rubbed off on me.
Sandi has been crafting, sewing and painting ever since I have been married and that will be 47 years on June 1st. When asked what Sandi likes to collect, she told us this, " I collect depression glass dishes, pink in the pattern Buttons and Bows (also known as Holiday.) My collection was started by actual pieces that were my mothers that she had received as wedding gifts when she got married, so those pieces especially mean a lot to me. I also collect figurines of old people. I only buy them when we are on a vacation somewhere, therefore meaning something specific to me - a time and a place - a happy memory.
Last but not least, I asked her what she has learned or gained from all of this and she told us: I especially cherish the friendships I have made through crafting and selling. I have learned so much from these new friends, be it computer help (I am computer challenged) ideas for creating, and sounding boards and encouragement to put myself out there and try new things. I thank all of them from the bottom of my heart. I hope someday we all have such great success with our crafting that we can afford to meet someplace fun and hang out as girlfriends. What a hoot that would be.

Hi. I'm Melody with Brown Gingham Creations. I have been a member of ECS for a year now. Debbi and I were chatting the other day, she thought I had an idea some of you would like to join in on and asked if I'd be a contributor to the ECS Blog. You see I had an idea for a monthly post a while back.

A Vintage/Collection Alphabet. Each month I'd write a post pertaining to something vintage I collect beginning with a corresponding letter of the alphabet. Okay, look out, I've been thinking again. I was hoping you all would help me make it more interesting by posting comments with links to your blogs showing others your corresponding vintage alphabet finds. January will be A. My post will pertain to APRONS, but you can show off your Apple collection, vintage Artworks, Aluminum, whatever you can think of, or, show off you apronature(C) and display your own aprons! All you need to do is create a post on your blog, click on the Mister Linky Icon at the bottom of this post, add your link and once that's done we all can visit each others blogs. Missing in action....

I've written before about how life gets crazy sometimes so I'm not even going there!

But I would really like to thank everyone that wrote me about my absence and tell you guys that everything is OK, just a little busier than normal.

I got an email this morning about a new swap at the Etsy Cottage Style Ning Group...a Christmas swap!...Don't miss it!!

Also, one of our Members, Jewel from Shabby Boutique is trying to raise funds for the National Children Cancer Society and because of her love for art and books, she is organizing a Pass Around Altered Book Project.
The theme, inspired on Jewel's and her Son Cody's touching story, is "Love and Hope for our little angels".

Her vision is one of 2 beautiful books. Each one with pages made by our talented members and artists. Once finished, the books will be offered for auction and all the proceeds donated to NCCS.

Late "Show off Monday"...

I'm sorry I'm late today!

We had a very late night... we attended our Nephew's wedding and when we came back home I couldn't even think about blogging...

As I took some photographs before the ceremony started, I realized I had 2 art pieces that I really wanted to "brag" about....

I've been "working" on them for a long time..
...18 years to be more precise...

...but I haven't done it alone. My Husband has worked as much as I did!....

and I can't forget all the rest of the family...they have certainly made an impression on them!...

These are my two art pieces...
My two kids: Mathias and Camila
and I don't only love them because they are mine, I also like them because they are fun, caring, smart, responsible, talented people.

To see them last night so grown up, in that gorgeous wedding setting, made me think that I'm not melancholic for the years gone...I'm excited for the future and all good things to come!

Show Off Monday...

I'm not very good at "sticking".

I usually start something, enjoy it for a while and then move on.

That's exactly what I did with my Etsy shop...Opened, sold a couple of things...got bored...didn't sell enough...didn't list again.
But for some reason I'm learning to be patient...did I hear age?...NEVER!!!!

Anyway, going back:

I decided this time to stick with it so I went back to the work table...(no studio here, just a little table, in the family room, next to the TV because I need the noise)
and had fun with some pieces.
Took pictures, (aren't the Etsy pictures just the best?)
Change the look of the store,
Listed,
and sold some pieces!...(not a lot, but many more that I had imagined)

Today I'm not "bragging" about selling, I'm just "bragging" about being able (for the first time in a long, long time) to go back to something I abandoned before and giving it another chance.

Could this this be a sign of maturity??? No, not age...maturity I said!!!

Who are the "Secret Admirers" in Etsy???
You know, people that admire your Etsy store or one of your items but they show up as "Secret Admirer"....

Because...
I just can't take the mystery...

Don't get me wrong, I'm flattered by any kind of "Admirer", but I just want to know: why are they secret???

I just would like to know my "Secret Admirers" so I can admire them back...that's all...pure admiration!!

Show Off Monday #2

I was having trouble finding something to brag about today, until Saturday came along....

Right there, on the soccer field, on what it felt like 350 degrees...I saw my Husband of 19 years coaching his soccer team, just like I've seen him do it every week end for the last 12 years...

To say that soccer is his passion, is an understatement...

When I see him with the team, before or after a game, I can see him glow.

I know that the kids and Parents love him not only because they always have winning seasons....they love him because he believes in positive coaching and team spirit...they admire him because
he knows how to bring out the best in each one of those teenage girls!

and that's why I'm "bragging" about my husband the Coach today...because after a stressful week at his "real" job, he has the power of letting everything go and show his team that positive attitude and team work always pays off...

Yes, I did it!! I picked a great guy to share my life with and I'm proudly bragging about it!
I love him and I'm so proud and thankful for all he does for our family!
He is the kind of guy I wish my son will grow up to be, and the kind of man my daughter will hopefully bring home some day.

Mom...you are weird!!!

That's what my kids always say about me. Why?
Well, because....

I don't text...
If we are close enough for you to have my phone #, we are close enough to talk to each other on the phone.

I don't like shopping, unless is for shoes....
No need to undress, they always fit and I don't have to worry if it makes my butt big!

I like vintage furniture...
Too many reasons to list why...

I don't like spas...
Just doesn't sound appealing to me...Give me some glitter, some paper and vintage findings and I'm a happy, relaxed clam!!

When I really think about the things that make me weird on my teenagers' eyes, I feel pretty good...It could be sooo much worse!! Don't you think?

My Parents didn't know about spas, or shopping at the mall, they liked new furniture and texting...well, let's not even go there!!!...and somehow for a long time I also thought they were weird!!!

Today's post is a very special one because it gives us the chance to help someone in need....

Maryn Cella, a precious three year old girl, is in the fight of her life battling Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rapidly growing cancerous brain tumor. Her family and friends are trying to raise funds for her treatment at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston.

One of our Members, Molly from Fleur de Bee, is generously donating 100% of all the proceeds from her Etsy Store to this cause. So far, Molly has been able to donate $472.00...YEAH!!!! ...but we can all help her to raise a lot more!

I was feeling like this....

...can you relate? I'm sure some of you can!

Decisions had to be made...

...and it was not easy to make everything fall in place...

But now that it's all done and I'm enjoying my "Retail Retirement" (I closed the retail store my Sister and I owned)...I'll have a lot more time to be inspired and create.
That means I will also have more time to dedicate to this blog that I enjoy so much...

And after thinking for a long, long time...

...I think I got a fun activity for us to do every week...

No!!!! No that!!! I said FUN, people!!

About ATC's...

We all know that Big Things come in Small Packages...jewelry, perfume...ATCs!!!

Altered Trading Cards (ATC) were first created in 1997 by Zurich artist M.Vänçi Stirnemann, as a mean for artists to share and socialize with other artists.

Just a couple of rules were implemented by M.Vänçi Stirnemann:

Cards should not be sold, just exchanged....Oooppss! I guess that rule has been forgotten... some ATC's became very collectible and can be found specially in auction sites from $.99 to a couple of hundred dollars!

Cards should be 2 ½ X 3 ½ inch in size.
What make these little works of art a challenge for some of us. I personally admire how many of you can express yourselves and transmit so much using such a small canvas!

Different styles, different techniques, different materials but all full of character!
